What students don’t appreciate graphic novels? And if they’re relatable, you’ll get major brownie points. This illustrated story is about a school girl with a “focus” problem in school. I know NONE of your students can relate to that! She spends all her time on Tik Tok, and as a result, does not comprehend what’s going on in class. This is when her friend comes in “clutch” to help. They hatch a creative plan together.

This Graphic E-Novella can be used as a standalone, part of FVR time or as a class read with the follow up activities. I am super excited about the text message activity. I know students will relish it!

Las Voces Diversas de la Diáspora!

Whether you’re teaching a sports unit, highlighting someone for Black History Month, or conducting independent reading with your students, Linda Caicedo, a talented and determined Afro-Colombian soccer player, is an excellent choice.

Students will learn about her life as a budding soccer phenom in the world of women’s sports. They will also explore her challenges and how she overcame them to become a household name in sports today.

Teaching Grammar is hard when it isn’t contextualized and used for a specific purpose. That’s why I created this brand spanking new story to help my students (and my mine, I mean yours as well) to communicate using DOP while talking about their books. The good news is that having the supportive context helped them. The bad news is that they want a third installment!

Ponte al Día (New!)

Adding to the wealth of resources your students can read in Spanish, I present to you “Ponte al Día.” It’s a collection of informational texts that you can use to supplement your curriculum, discuss cultural events in a comprehensible manner, support the use of authentic resources, and we’ll delve into new trends. This publication will include “un poco de todo.” And we’ve already begun to work on the next edition… and it’s just as exciting!

Take a peek ahead of the TPT sale. It’s offered in a bundle, if you’re dying to have more materials to jump start Free Voluntary Reading. Or, if you’re looking to supplement the curriculum, the articles are individually as well. Choose your own adventure!

Best of all, they include activities that will help students access the information in a doable way. What’s included in this edition?

  • El festival Verano de Bogotá (co-written in collaboration with a writer from Colombia)
  • Día de los afrobolivianos

Día de la Persona Negra y La Cultura Afrocostarricense

This informational text highlights information about Costa Rica’s African roots and subsequent celebration of identity and culture.

The text is suited for Spanish students in the novice Mid-high. It’s packed with cognates and engaging illustrations that invite students into the the story, and to the party!

Día de la persona Negra y la Cultura Afrocostarricense is a celebration of identity, culture, and traditions. People of African descent in the Americas have fought long and hard to preserve their cultural traditions, and reclaim their identity years after the devastating effects of colonialism; this is just one such example.

This resource discusses, in basic Spanish, key highlights of that celebration, which include pictorial depictions of dances, speeches, and creating artwork. Students will learn about this important holiday while reinforcing some basic vocabulary words and structures in Spanish (engaging artwork included). Use to contex

Ya know what this resource would would pair well with? The bio on Epsy Campbell Barr and her sister Shirley Campbell Barr resource, aptly named: El éxito es genético! This resource chronicles the life, interests, education, passions, and public service career of the first Afro-latina vice president of Costa Rica. And her sister is a powerhouse in her own right!

What can I do with this resource? It’s not Black History Month? I’m glad you asked! There’s a lot you can do!

1. Use the article to highlight personal descriptions (fuerte, poderosa, inteligente). It talk quite a bit about these two women and the characteristics & values that made them successful.

2. Use the text as a “Persona especial” feature. Students can read through and highlight cognates at the beginning of Spanish 1 and reconstruct her life. I do this at times with texts that are slightly above, but culturally rich. Why do you think she’s famous for? Spanish Mid-high level students won’t have a problem.

3. It’s perfect for talking about immigration as well. We don’t have to limit ourselves to talking about one subject. The article hits on the massive immigration in Costa Rica to build the railways, which is why Epsy’s grandparents came from Jamaica.

4. Add some informational text as part of your FVR.

5. Use the poem by Shirley Campbell Barr to talk about self-esteem, self-love & self acceptance.

Texting in Spanish!

This best-of-texting activity is loosely based on the characters from my level 2 novel: Cómo salir de la zona de amigos.” However, students don’t have to read the level 2 comprehensible novel to enjoy the content. This contains an informational text sheet, a dialogue contextualizing SMS language in Spanish, and practice!

Have your students ever wondered about what happens when they post information about themselves incessantly online? This resource gives them an insightful idea! Based on the video “Tu vida en las redes sociales.”

Your students will have a front row seat into how not to do social media, with this thought-provoking video. The video is available on Youtube, and the activities below will help you get the most out of this resource!

Overview: The premise of the video is to demonstrate digital citizenship and the how what we publish online, can inevitably linger forever in the virtual realm. This PSA reinforces the notion that our social media content can give strangers access, and information about our lives.

La inteligencia artificial

The world is abuzz now exploring the next generation of AI tools; as well as the impact and implications that will arise.
