The Easy Roll-Out: Beginning the Year Without Burning Out

Roll Out 2.0: A Calmer, Smarter Start to the School Year
This strategy was first shared in 2023, and I’ve been rolling with it ever since. Each year, it helps me ease into the school year with more calm and less chaos—and I hope it brings the same peace and clarity to your classroom, too.

Less Stress More Serenity

The beginning of the year is very stressful now matter what type of summer you had. Most of us have been away from our daily routines we had hard-wired into our brains for at least 6 weeks. Coming back can be akin to taking a polar plunge on an already frigid day, especially when you receive a barrage of emails, tight deadlines, and “Need-To-Do-Now items.

During the first week of school as overwhelm was settling into my spirit, I took some time to reflect and myself:

These may seem like a benign questions, but many of us feel torn with the sheer volume of requests. I also noticed that most administrators work in the summer, so this “busyness” is their regular cadence. This preliminary set of questions was liberating, and help me to about face. The consequent approach has been helping me to reintroduce school routines, etc into my regular diet.

The short video below provides a few tips on how to do go about this!

We can divide and conquer—and still have energy left for ourselves and our families. I’m no longer willing to pour extra time into things that don’t matter or simply aren’t the priority right now.
