New Spanish Comprehensible Novel for Level 2: ¡Amaya Visita México!

With approximately 200 unique words (words such as madre, padre, nadar, etc), mostly in the present tense structures, students will explore the wonders of the Yucatan Peninsula, its plants, animals, and the adventure that Mexico offers. They’ll connect with the friendship between a young girl from the U.S. and a Mexican-American boy who proudly embraces his culture while gently guiding her through her fears. Students will relate to the challenges of a young person navigating life with parents who don’t always understand and can sometimes be impatient. The story culminates in this young friendship deciding to reach out and help others, making it a meaningful and impactful journey. Hopefully, students will see themselves reflected as they attempt to slay the fear monsters in their own lives.

Backstory

I cannot tell you all how EXCITED I am to be finally publishing this novel! It has been in the works since my TRANSFORMATIVE trip to Mexico in 2021. While there, something amazing happened; I overcame fear, and did some amazing firsts. It was my first time swimming in the ocean, in cenotes, and I learned a lot about flora, fauna, and respect for nature due to a very gentle, friendly, and open Mayan guide.

My husband, who has dragged me on vacation with him and witnessed my fear (due to a traumatic experience as a kid) thought I was a hopeless case. But Mauricio, the guide, whose love for nature, and respect for the ancestral Mayan grounds led me through a series of practices and shared stories that ultimately stripped away my fear, and led me to live more boldly. He made me a believer in myself; and I started trusting the process.

This life-altering experience has been refashioned and reframed into a comprehensible novel, and told through the perspective of a young city girl who travels to México for the first time with her larger-than-life-adventuring-seeking parents. Anxiety and fear-ridden, she encounters a friend, who may help her to realize her full human potential.
