Soltar la sopa, by Theresa Jensen

My review of Theresa’s Jensen “Soltar la Sopa!

This book is perfect for students who may not be ready to commit to a full novel. The short stories are engaging, relatable, and packed with thought-provoking moments. Many of the situations reflect real-life experiences and topics students love to discuss.

As a teacher of upper-level Spanish (Levels 3, 4, and Dual Credit), I’ve found that my most engaging lessons often come from short stories like these or current events—whether it’s Shakira’s breakup with Piqué or Ariana Grande’s latest relationship. These are the moments when class comes alive.

When I read this book, I was immediately drawn in by how compelling the stories are. Students gravitate toward them, making it a great addition to your classroom. Here are a few ways you can use it:

1. Independent Reading – Add it to your free voluntary reading library as an option for students who might be hesitant to pick up a full novel. This book can serve as a stepping stone, and chances are, they’ll end up reading all the stories.

2. Classroom Discussions – Select a story to read aloud and have students discuss, give advice, or share what they would do in a similar situation. Many of these stories naturally spark conversations about real-life experiences.

I highly recommend checking out this book—your students will relish the stories!
