¡Visita San Andrés, Colombia! New Spanish Resource with Audio!

This is one of our newest additions to our publication “Voces Diversas.” You can view the bundle of our publications here. This was a personal project for me! I have been working on this resource from quite some time! I visited San Andrés, Colombia many years ago and it was one of the bests trips. From having the best food, working with the natives and braiding hair on the beach, and deep discussions about Diaspora, it was a very affirming time. I’ve always wanted to write about the experience so students can learn about the diversity in Colombia, especially from a place that shares so many cultural connections.

What’s So Special About San Andrés

San Andrés is comprised of various island. I visited the largest one in the archipelago. Fun fact: It’s actually closer to Nicaragua than Colombia. We were told it’s a 20 minute boat ride to the Nicaraguan coast. It was about 1.5 hours from Bogotá, Colombia.

People from San Andrés have a storied history. They were colonized by both English, and Spanish. It was in effect a pirate’s cove, and there are legends about a lost treasure! The inhabitants speak both languages as well as their dialect, like most places with linguistic diversity. In fact, I was mistaken as a native while there due to my skin color and locks. I even started braiding hair on the beach with people because I got asked so many times! It was fun being an asistente!

One of the thing I found very unique about the island is that you’d think you were actually in Jamaica! Not only for the skin color of the inhabitants, but the Jamaican flags and colors everywhere. The food is very similar to Soul Food or southern cuisine. I had some of the best macaroni and cheese while there!
