This week on Teaching From the Trenches, we looked at books with an integrated cast of characters. The theme emerging this week was identity and self-acceptance. Take a look below at the novels as you might want to grab a few for you classroom library!
La pasajera misteriosa
Imagine meeting someone on a flight who changes the course of your life—that’s the story behind La pasajera misteriosa.
Xavier is recovering from a major social embarrassment, and it weighs on him heavily. However, that isn’t the only battle he’s fighting. His problems are getting bigger and his enemies are multiplying. He feels trapped and is slowly losing his ability to manage it all. He meets several people who potentially hold the keys to helping him change his reality, outlooks, and attitude. Will they succeed? Or is he too stuck in his ways?
How can you use this novel in class? There are so many interconnected themes that will make this a perfect class novel:
- Identity: The main character struggles with living up the to expectation that he should be “good” at basketball. This makes him struggle with certain aspects of his identity
- Teen rivalry: The main character gets into a rivalry with other teens at a sporting event.
- Family: The main character’s parents are separating, and he struggles with this new family dynamic, losing his girlfriend, and feeling a loss at sports
- Travel: They family travels to Hawaii learns about American history, and makes connection to his own life
- Friendship: The main character meets and Afro-Boricua girl, who shares some of his obstacles. Her perspective is VERY valuable. Sometimes, you need to hear things from your peers.

This one was a NEW ONE for me, and is by a new author. I love it for the message of self-acceptance, and its comprehensibility. Click this link to find out more about this book!
El Pelo Incontrolable

Yo Sé Como Hacerlo
This heartwarming true story by Joan Soriano, told in his own voice and produced by Karen Rowan, resonated deeply with my heritage students. Many, especially those from Mexico, connected with Joan’s upbringing and found meaningful parallels to their own rural experiences.

This is a must-have addition to your classroom library or curriculum.
This comprehensible, engaging adventure explores identity, self-acceptance, and family dynamics, making it a captivating read for students.
El Portal: En Busca de la verdad
This was probably one of my favorite novels to write! In addition to setting it in Venezuela and Colombia, I got the opportunity to work with a journalist from Venezuela, how vetted the story from an insider’s perspective. That connection added a level of realism to the story. So, if you’re looking for an adventurous, sci-fi story with realism and historical fiction, check out El Portal: En busca de la verdad!

This is a little-known secret…
Did you know he was North America’s first Black president, nearly 200 years before Obama? He abolished slavery in 1829 and fought for equality for all, regardless of race or economic status—earning him the title “Mexico’s greatest man of color.”
This diverse and inclusive resource is perfect for Mexico’s Independence Day, Hispanic Heritage Month, and Black History Month!
