Integrating Black History In the WL Classroom: Series from “Teaching From the Trenches.”

I put together this blog post as part of my Teaching from the Trenches series, where I’m sharing resources a few times a week that you can use in your classroom during Black History Month. But let me be clear—these resources aren’t just for February. They can be used any time of year, integrated seamlessly with your curriculum, and connected to other content areas.

That said, I also recognize that February is a time when many of us intentionally carve out space to highlight, reflect on, and celebrate Black history and contributions of being of African descent, such as Afro-Latinos. As a teacher, I completely understand the balance. I strive to include diverse voices, perspectives, and cultural traditions throughout the year. But I also find that dedicated months—whether it’s Black History Month, Women’s History Month, or Native American Heritage Month—serve as important reminders to ensure representation is woven into the curriculum!

This will be a rolling blog post, meaning every time I share a resource in my group, I’ll also add it here. So if you’re not a member yet (and you totally should be!), you can still find all the resources in one place.

Let’s get started!

Week 1: Dynamic and Trailblazing Afro-Latinos!

  1. Trailblazing Afro-Latinos Bundle (Colombia, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica). Learn about a variety of Afro-Latinos, traditions, holidays, and customs in this content-packed bundle. Each story is equipped with a glossary, and comprehension question are included!

2. Arturo Schomburg (Puerto Rico). He’s one of the pillars of the Harlem Renaissance. He has such an inspiring story! Read about it here in this short novella!

4. Visita San Andrés, Colombia- This could easily be the second Isla del Encanto! This culturally rich island, part of Colombia and located off the coast of Nicaragua, boasts a fascinating history shaped by English and Spanish influences. Its unique language, cuisine, and pristine landscapes make it a true hidden gem worth celebrating. And the story comes with audio! Click on the sample below!

5. Esteban Sinesterra (Fashionista from Colombia)

He dresses the VP of Colombia, an Afro-Colombian political activist. He’s made quite a name for himself and your students will love these patterns! If you want to learn more about the Afro-Colombian Vice President, we have THIS level 1 text in this edition of Diaspora; or you can use THIS text with your upper-level students!

Bonus! I had th pleasure of interviewing Dr. Guzmán and Valerie Butrón about their book: We Celebrate Juneteenth Unidos. It’s a beautifully written intercultural book that could be used for picture talks or for bilingual teaching. The book and their story can be found at Tumbaobooks.com

You can check out the website below if you want to find out about the authors, and or support them!
